Art as Resistance to Dominant Masculinity

May 22, 2011

MassArt
Pozen Centre
Tetlow Street

This program will introduce the theoretical model of hegemonic masculinity in order to understand how dominant modes of masculinity are created and reinforced in various cultures.

Following this introduction, a model for understanding ways in which people negotiate with and resist dominant forms of masculinity will be presented alongside various video clips of people discussing various ways to understand what masculinity means. Finally, art as a medium to respond to dominant masculinity (particularly in the form of violence against women) will be presented with various examples of ways in which artists help shape new ways of thinking about masculinity and gender.
