Presenter: Jack S. Kahn, Ph.D., is the Professor & Program Director for PhD program in Clinical Psychology at California School of Professional Psychology, Alliant University.

Educational Objective: To introduce the audience to the ‘crisis of men’ and three views on its origin and potential solutions to addressing it including the essentialist, psychosocial, and social constructionist perspective. The presentation will leave room for discussion.

Abstract: The social sciences have used the term ‘crisis of men’ or ‘crisis in masculinity’ to refer to the changes and shifts that seem to have happened in the last twenty years in regard to proportional difficulties that men as a social group appear to be having. These include problems in educational attainment, violence toward self and other, health seeking, medical problems, nutrition, etc. While the field generally agrees that men are having difficulty in these arenas, they disagree as to the source and potential solutions of this crisis. This talk wills summarize four chapters of the recently released text ‘an introduction to masculinities’ in which three clear paths of defining the problem and solution are taken place; the essentialist perspective, the psychosocial perspective, and the social constructionist perspective. While most people do not adhere strictly to one perspective, this delineation can help elevate tensions within the field of gender and masculinities and assist in planning solutions with male identified people struggling with these issues.

This program will introduce the theoretical model of hegemonic masculinity in order to understand how dominant modes of masculinity are created and reinforced in various cultures.

Following this introduction, a model for understanding ways in which people negotiate with and resist dominant forms of masculinity will be presented alongside various video clips of people discussing various ways to understand what masculinity means. Finally, art as a medium to respond to dominant masculinity (particularly in the form of violence against women) will be presented with various examples of ways in which artists help shape new ways of thinking about masculinity and gender.
